About this Attraction
Located in the ancient capital of Nara, Yakushiji Temple (薬師寺) is one of Japan’s most revered and architecturally significant Buddhist temples. Originally built in the late 7th century by Emperor Tenmu to pray for the recovery of his ailing wife, this historic temple has long been a symbol of healing, balance, and enlightenment. Although much of the original structure was lost to fires and natural disasters, the temple has been beautifully reconstructed to reflect its original grandeur.
Yakushiji is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, and is one of the most important temples in the Hosso school of Buddhism. The centrepiece of the temple grounds is the Golden Hall (Kondo), which houses a striking statue of Yakushi Nyorai flanked by two attendant Bodhisattvas. The statues are masterpieces of Japanese Buddhist sculpture, dating back to the 8th century.
The East Pagoda, the only original structure surviving from the 8th century, is an iconic three-story tower known for its intricate design and perfect symmetry. Its elegant form and historical significance make it a national treasure and a favourite subject for photographers and art historians.
Visitors to Yakushiji can stroll through tranquil courtyards, admire classical architecture, and enjoy the temple's peaceful atmosphere. The temple hosts religious ceremonies, cultural events, and seasonal illuminations throughout the year that provide insight into traditional Japanese spirituality and aesthetics.
A short distance from Toshodaiji Temple, Yakushiji makes for an excellent cultural day trip in Nara. Whether you’re seeking spiritual reflection, artistic inspiration, or historical insight, Yakushiji Temple offers a deep and meaningful experience in the heart of Japan’s cultural heritage.
