About this Attraction

Tucked away just a short walk from Nara Park and Todaiji Temple, Isuien Garden (依水園) is one of Nara’s most enchanting and serene attractions. Its name means “garden founded on water.” True to that name, Isuien is a beautiful Japanese landscape garden that harmoniously blends ponds, teahouses, stone paths, and seasonal flora. It offers a peaceful retreat where visitors can experience the refined aesthetic of traditional Japanese garden design.

Isuien is unique in that it consists of two distinct gardens: the front garden, created during the Edo period (17th century), and the rear garden, added in the Meiji era (19th century). The front garden centres around a scenic pond, reflecting the surrounding trees and teahouse structures. The rear garden is more expansive and uses the technique of “shakkei” or borrowed scenery, incorporating the backdrop of Mount Wakakusa and Todai-ji’s Nandaimon Gate to create a breathtaking, layered landscape.

One of the highlights of Isuien is the Neiraku Museum, located within the garden grounds. It houses a valuable collection of East Asian ceramics and calligraphy, enriching the cultural experience of your visit.

Perfect in every season—from cherry blossoms in spring to fiery maple leaves in autumn—Isuien is a favourite among photographers, artists, and those seeking calm reflection. Its carefully curated layout invites slow walking and mindful observation, making it a perfect spot to escape the crowds of Nara.

Whether you love Japanese gardens, history, or simply tranquil spaces, Isuien Garden offers an unforgettable blend of nature and artistry in one of Japan’s oldest cities.
