About this Attraction
Located in the tranquil Ikaruga area of Nara Prefecture, Horyuji Temple (法隆寺) is one of Japan’s most treasured cultural and historical landmarks. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Horyuji is widely acclaimed as the oldest surviving wooden structure in the world, with parts of the temple dating back to the early 7th century. Prince Shotoku, a key figure in the early promotion of Buddhism in Japan, initially commissioned it. It stands as a symbol of the country's deep spiritual roots and architectural mastery.
The temple complex is divided into two main areas: the Sai-in Garan (Western Precinct) and the To-in Garan (Eastern Precinct). The Western area houses the iconic Five-Story Pagoda, Kondo (Main Hall), and central gate, all stunning examples of Asuka period architecture. These structures have stood the test of time for over 1,300 years, preserving their artistic beauty and religious significance.
Inside the halls, visitors will find a rich collection of Buddhist statues, paintings, and ancient relics that offer a window into Japan’s spiritual and cultural history. Many of these artefacts are designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.
Horyuji Temple is more than a historic site—it remains an active monastery and centre of Buddhist study. Surrounded by serene pathways and seasonal beauty, it offers visitors a peaceful and meaningful experience. Whether you're passionate about ancient history, traditional architecture, or spiritual exploration, Horyuji invites you to walk through the origins of Japanese Buddhism.
Plan your visit to Horyuji and step into a legacy that has shaped the heart of Japanese culture for over a millennium.
