About this Attraction

Yumoto Onsen (湯元), meaning "origin of hot water," is a tranquil hot spring town deep within Nikko National Park. Located beside serene Lake Yunoko, this charming retreat is known for its traditional ryokan inns, which offer relaxing thermal baths powered by the area's natural hot springs. The town is calming, with the subtle scent of sulfur and steam rising from bubbling springs in nearby marshes.

One of the town's key highlights is Onsenji Temple, a small Buddhist temple with a public hot spring bath that allows visitors to bathe in sacred, healing waters. Just beside it is Yunodaira Marsh, the source of much of the town's geothermal activity, where you can witness hot water bubbling directly from the ground. A short walk away, along the northern shores of Lake Yunoko, you'll find more steam vents and geothermal sights.

Just south of the lake, Yudaki Waterfall crashes down a dramatic 70-meter slope, marking the beginning of the Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail. This scenic hiking route runs through lush forest, marshlands, and the Yukawa River, eventually connecting Yumoto Onsen to Ryuzu Waterfall near Lake Chuzenji.

Yumoto Onsen is especially stunning in mid-October, when autumn foliage paints the landscape in vibrant reds and golds. The natural beauty, peaceful hot springs, and spiritual history make Yumoto Onsen an ideal destination for those seeking rest and rejuvenation in a pristine mountain environment.

Whether you come for a short hike, a long soak, or to enjoy the seasonal colours, Yumoto Onsen offers a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and nature.
