About this Attraction

Akechidaira Plateau (明智平), located near the summit of Nikko's famous Irohazaka Winding Road, offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the region. This scenic stop features a free observation deck overlooking the valley and the winding roads below, especially popular during the autumn foliage season when the mountains burst into brilliant shades of red and gold. It's an ideal photo spot and a relaxing break point for those driving to Lake Chuzenji.

Beside the parking area stands a rest house that doubles as a souvenir shop, a cosy cafeteria, and the lower station for the Akechidaira Ropeway. This short but breathtaking cable car ride takes just three minutes. It transports visitors to an upper observation deck with sweeping views of Kegon Waterfall, Lake Chuzenji, and the surrounding mountains. On clear days, the scenery from the top is nothing short of spectacular, drawing photographers, hikers, and sightseers alike.

For the more adventurous, a two-hour hiking trail connects Lake Chuzenji to the upper observatory. This path also leads to Mount Hangetsuyama, making Akechidaira an excellent starting point for nature lovers exploring the Nikko National Park. Whether arriving by car, taking the ropeway, or hiking your way up, Akechidaira Plateau offers a perfect blend of accessibility, natural beauty, and seasonal charm.

Easily reachable and rich in visual appeal, Akechidaira is best visited from October to November, when fall colours peak. With free entry to the lower deck and modest ropeway fees, it remains one of Nikko’s hidden gems for anyone seeking panoramic landscapes and serene mountain vistas.
