About this Attraction
Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖, Chūzenjiko) is a picturesque lake nestled high in the mountains of Nikko National Park at the foot of Mount Nantai, a sacred volcano. The lake was formed over 20,000 years ago when an eruption blocked the valley below, creating one of the region’s most stunning natural landmarks. At an elevation of 1269 meters, Lake Chuzenji offers cooler temperatures during Japan’s humid summers and has long attracted locals and foreign diplomats seeking relaxation in nature.
The eastern shore is home to Chuzenji Onsen, a charming hot spring town with beautiful lake views, traditional ryokan inns, and access to Kegon Waterfall, one of Japan’s most famous and photogenic falls. At the lake’s northern edge lies Ryuzu Waterfall, where the Yukawa River flows into the lake, surrounded by rich forest landscapes.
Lake Chuzenji is a paradise for outdoor lovers. Visitors can enjoy hiking around its 25-kilometre shoreline via well-maintained, hilly walking trails. For a more relaxed experience, sightseeing cruises depart from Chuzenji Onsen, providing lake views and photography opportunities from the water. One of the best panoramic viewpoints is located along the Chuzenjiko Skyline. This scenic mountain road winds high above the lake and is breathtaking in mid to late October, when the autumn leaves reach full colour.
Though much of the lakeshore remains undeveloped and tranquil, the area near Chuzenji Onsen features shops, cafés, and boat and bus access points. Whether you’re seeking hiking, relaxation, or simply scenic beauty, Lake Chuzenji is a must-see destination that embodies the natural charm and sacred energy of the Nikko region.
