About this Attraction

The Kanaya Hotel History House (金谷ホテル歴史館, Kanaya Hotel Rekishikan) is a beautifully preserved historical residence in Nikko and the birthplace of Japan’s oldest Western-style hotel. Built in the late 1800s, this two-story wooden structure was originally the private home of Mr. Kanaya, who opened it to foreign guests in 1872 as the Kanaya Cottage Inn. It served travellers during a transformative time when Japan had just ended its isolationist policies and was opening up to the world. The inn was particularly popular among diplomats, scholars, and explorers, including notable guests like Albert Einstein and Isabella Bird, the famed British travel writer who helped introduce Nikko to the West.

Today, the Kanaya Hotel continues operations at a different location above the Shinkyo Bridge. Still, this original house—the predecessor of the Kanaya Hotel—remains a cultural and architectural time capsule. Visitors can explore traditional tatami rooms, admire historic wooden staircases, and stroll through the quiet Japanese-style garden surrounding the house. The blend of old Japanese architecture and early Western hospitality makes this site a rare and unique experience in Nikko.

Admission tickets are available at the bakery next door, which adds a quaint and convenient touch to your visit. The house provides multilingual displays, making it easy for international visitors to understand the site's significance.

Perfect for history lovers and cultural explorers, the Kanaya Hotel History House is a peaceful and educational stop that offers insight into Meiji-era hospitality and the early development of Nikko as an international destination.
