About this Attraction

Nestled in the forested mountains of Nikko, Kirifuri Waterfall (霧降の滝, Kirifuri no taki) is a breathtaking natural attraction that showcases the raw beauty of Japan's landscape. Towering at 75 meters, this two-tiered waterfall lies just a few kilometres northeast of the city's famed shrines and temples. Its name, which translates to "falling mist," poetically captures the fine spray created as the water crashes onto the rocks below, creating a magical, misty aura that enhances its charm.

Visitors could once hike to the waterfall's base, but the trail was closed several years ago after a landslide. Today, the waterfall is best admired from a wooden observation deck perched across the valley. The deck provides panoramic views of the cascading water and the lush forest that envelops it. The observation point is accessible via a ten-minute walk along a paved trail from the nearby parking lot and bus stop.

Each season offers a unique experience. The surrounding forest is alive in spring and summer with vibrant greenery and birdsong. At the same time, autumn transforms the landscape into a tapestry of fiery reds, oranges, and golds, typically at their peak from late October to early November. The refreshing mountain air and natural acoustics of falling water make it a peaceful retreat from the busier areas of Nikko.

Facilities near the observation area include public toilets and two small restaurants, making it a comfortable stop for families, nature lovers, and photographers alike. Whether you're visiting for the fall foliage or the calming sights and sounds of rushing water, Kirifuri Waterfall offers a serene escape and a stunning display of Japan's natural beauty.
