About this Attraction

Shukkeien Garden is a stunning example of traditional Japanese landscape design in the centre of Hiroshima City, offering visitors a peaceful retreat from the urban bustle. Initially constructed in 1620 by Ueda Soko, a tea master for the Asano samurai clan, the garden was modelled after classical Chinese landscapes and designed to represent a miniature version of natural scenery—including mountains, valleys, rivers, and forests—all within a compact space.

The name "Shukkeien" translates to “shrunken-scenery garden,” and every corner lives up to its name. A central pond forms the heart of the garden, encircled by winding walking paths, charming bridges, teahouses, and seasonal flowers. Visitors can stroll through this carefully curated landscape and enjoy the harmonious balance between nature and design.

Throughout the year, the garden offers a changing canvas of seasonal beauty. In spring, cherry blossoms bloom alongside the water’s edge. Summer brings vibrant greenery, autumn paints the trees in fiery reds and golds, and winter transforms the garden into a serene, snow-dusted sanctuary. Shukkeien is also known for its koi-filled pond, offering moments of reflection and joy for guests of all ages.

Despite being damaged during the 1945 atomic bombing, the garden has been lovingly restored and now stands as a symbol of resilience, peace, and cultural preservation. Just a short walk from Hiroshima Station or the Peace Memorial Park, Shukkeien is a must-visit attraction for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking quiet contemplation.

Whether you're enjoying a tranquil walk, sipping tea, or admiring the seasonal views, a visit to Shukkeien Garden provides a deeply enriching and calming experience—an essential stop on your journey through Hiroshima.
