About this Attraction
The Kanmangafuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) is one of Nikko's hidden gems—an atmospheric gorge formed by ancient volcanic activity from nearby Mount Nantai. Located just a short walk from central Nikko, this natural feature is only a few hundred meters long. Still, it offers an enchanting, serene walking experience along a peaceful riverside trail. The path is easy to follow, uncrowded, and perfect for travellers seeking a quiet, reflective moment amid nature.
What makes Kanmangafuchi particularly captivating is the line of about 70 stone Jizo statues that sit quietly along the trail, watching over the river. Jizo is a beloved Bodhisattva in Japanese Buddhism, believed to protect the souls of the deceased, children, and travellers. This group of statues is known by various names, including "Narabi Jizo" (Jizo in a line), "Hyaku Jizo" (100 Jizo), and "Bake Jizo" (Ghost Jizo). The nickname "Bake Jizo" arises from a local legend claiming the statues cannot be counted accurately—every time you try, you'll end up with a different number.
The trail is lined with mossy stones, forested paths, and soothing river sounds, making it an ideal setting for photography, peaceful walks, or cultural reflection. On the opposite bank is the Nikko Botanical Garden, which offers scenic views but cannot be accessed directly from the abyss.
Kanmangafuchi Abyss is free to enter and accessible year-round, with stunning scenery in autumn and spring. It's a must-visit for those wanting to escape tourist crowds and experience the spiritual tranquillity Nikko is known for. While no shops or restrooms are on site, the walk is short enough to complete comfortably in 30–45 minutes.
