About this Attraction

Located on the northern edge of Kiba Park in Tokyo’s Koto Ward, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (MOT) is a must-visit destination for art lovers. Opened in 1995 and reopened in 2019 after a three-year renovation, MOT is one of Japan’s largest contemporary art institutions. It showcases a wide array of Japanese and international works from the 20th century to today. The museum is particularly known for its focus on postwar and modern art movements, making it a hub for creativity, education, and cultural exchange.

Designed by architect Takahiko Yanagisawa, the museum’s bold and modern architecture is as visually striking as its collections. MOT’s permanent collection includes over 5,500 artworks across genres like painting, fashion, graphic design, architecture, and new media. The museum also hosts 6 to 8 temporary exhibitions annually, featuring emerging and internationally renowned artists.

MOT is more than just an exhibition space—it promotes art education through workshops, lectures, and events, welcoming visitors of all ages and backgrounds. The museum has a library of over 270,000 materials, a museum shop, a stylish café/lounge, and a restaurant, making it a perfect half-day destination.

While admission is charged separately for the permanent and special exhibitions, MOT offers a rewarding experience that blends visual inspiration with quiet reflection. It’s easily accessible via public transportation, just a 10-minute walk from Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station.
