About this Attraction

Located in Shibuya City, just minutes from Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, the National Noh Theatre offers a rich cultural experience for those seeking to explore Japan’s traditional performing arts. Opened in 1983 and operated by the Japan Arts Council, this elegant theatre is home to noh, kyogen, kabuki, and bunraku performances, showcasing centuries-old storytelling techniques through music, dance, masks, and puppetry.

The nearly 600-seat theatre features a striking interior made predominantly of wood, with a 400-year-old cypress stage as its centrepiece. The pine tree motif painted on the backdrop reflects the traditional style of Noh theatre. The venue also includes a rehearsal stage, lecture room, reference library, and the Traditional Performing Arts Information Centre, an exhibition space on the first floor that displays costumes, props, and ukiyo-e woodblock prints. This area is free to enter and open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Performances range from serious and poetic noh plays to the comedic kyogen, often performed between acts of noh in a format called nogaku, which UNESCO recognises as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The theatre also presents kabuki, known for its expressive acting and dance, and bunraku, a traditional form of Japanese puppet theatre.

Visitors can book tickets online, by phone, or at the theatre. Conveniently located near several train stations, including Sendagaya and Kita-Sando, the National Noh Theatre is an essential cultural destination for newcomers and enthusiasts of Japan’s performing arts.
