About this Attraction
The Tokyo National Museum, located in Ueno Park, is Japan's oldest and most prestigious museum, offering a deep dive into the rich history and culture of the country. Established in 1872, the museum houses over 110,000 artifacts, including samurai swords, Buddhist statues, ceramics, kimono, and national treasures that span centuries. Its grand architecture and beautifully curated exhibition halls provide a serene and respectful atmosphere for appreciating Japan’s artistic and historical achievements.
The museum is composed of multiple galleries, such as the Honkan (Japanese Gallery), the Toyokan (Asian Gallery), the Heiseikan (special exhibitions), and the Hyokeikan, each presenting a unique aspect of art and culture from Japan and neighboring countries. Highlights include priceless ukiyo-e woodblock prints, beautifully preserved scrolls, and archaeological discoveries from ancient Japan. Audio guides and multilingual support make it accessible to international visitors.
One of the best times to visit is year-round, as the museum offers both permanent exhibits and rotating special exhibitions. However, spring and autumn—especially April to October—are particularly pleasant, with comfortable weather and the added beauty of Ueno Park’s cherry blossoms or fall foliage. While May tends to be the busiest month due to Golden Week, visiting on weekdays can offer a more relaxed experience.
Open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (with extended hours for special exhibitions), the museum is closed on Mondays unless it's a public holiday. Visitors can also enjoy a break at the on-site café or browse through the museum shop for high-quality souvenirs.
