About this Attraction

Located in Ōmiya-ku, Saitama Prefecture, Hikawa Shrine is one of the most historically significant and spiritually revered Shinto shrines in the Kanto region. With a history stretching back over 2,400 years, it serves as the head shrine for the network of over 280 Hikawa shrines found throughout Japan. Dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god of Shinto mythology, as well as his family deities, Hikawa Shrine is a place where visitors come to pray for good fortune, protection, and prosperity.

The shrine complex features a long, grand approach that stretches nearly two kilometers, lined with beautiful trees that create a peaceful and sacred atmosphere. One of the highlights of visiting Hikawa Shrine is the surrounding Ōmiya Park, a large public park that offers an array of seasonal beauty. In spring, the park becomes a popular cherry blossom viewing spot, with numerous sakura trees blooming in vibrant pinks, attracting families, couples, and photographers. The park also houses a small zoo, which provides a fun and educational experience for children, and the Saitama Prefectural Museum of History and Folklore, offering deeper insight into the local culture and history.

Throughout the year, the shrine hosts several traditional festivals and events, including New Year’s celebrations (Hatsumode) when thousands of worshippers visit to pray for a prosperous year ahead. Easily accessible from Ōmiya Station, Hikawa Shrine offers not only a spiritual retreat but also a cultural and recreational destination for all ages. Its combination of religious significance, natural beauty, and family-friendly attractions makes it a must-visit location for anyone exploring Saitama and the greater Tokyo area.
