About this Attraction

Kasama Inari Shrine, located in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, is one of Japan's most important and historic Inari shrines. It was founded in 651 during the reign of Emperor Kotoku and has a history stretching back over 1,300 years. As one of Japan's three most prominent Inari shrines, it has earned the prestigious Senior First Rank, the highest court rank for shrines. More than 3.5 million pilgrims and visitors travel to Kasama Inari each year to offer prayers for prosperity, good harvests, and personal blessings.

The Deity: Ukanomitama no Kami

The shrine is dedicated to Ukanomitama no Kami, a kami deeply connected to food, grain, and life. According to Japan's oldest mythological record, the Kojiki, Ukanomitama no Kami is the child of Susanoo no Okami and Kamuoichihime no Kami. "Uka" means foodstuffs, symbolising the vital spirit within grains and harvests. This deity governs the five grains and represents fertility, prosperity, growth, and abundance, making Kasama Inari a central place of worship for farmers, merchants, and those seeking success in business and personal life.

Foxes as Messengers

While many associate Inari shrines with foxes, these animals are not the actual deities but serve as divine messengers. In ancient Shinto beliefs, seasonal patterns saw mountain deities descend to the rice fields in spring, similar to foxes appearing near human dwellings. This connection made the fox a fitting symbol for carrying prayers between the human and divine realms, reinforcing its sacred role at Inari shrines.

Cultural Importance Today

Kasama Inari Shrine continues to thrive as a sacred destination, blending rich tradition with modern devotion. Its peaceful atmosphere, ancient history, and spiritual significance make it a must-visit for anyone exploring Japan's cultural heritage.
