About this Attraction

Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizuwakamatsu Castle, is a symbol of resilience and history nestled in the heart of Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture. Originally built in the late 14th century, the castle played a pivotal role during the Boshin War in the late 19th century, showcasing the samurai spirit and fierce determination of the Aizu domain. The castle’s striking architecture, characterized by its distinctive red-tiled roof contrasting with white walls, immediately captures the attention of visitors. After being destroyed during the war, the castle was meticulously reconstructed in 1965, now serving as both a museum and a cultural landmark. Inside the castle tower, visitors can explore exhibits that narrate the history of the castle, samurai armor, weapons, and the region’s role in Japanese history. The top floor offers panoramic views of Aizuwakamatsu city and the surrounding mountains, providing a breathtaking perspective of the area’s natural beauty.

One of the most popular times to visit Tsuruga Castle is during the spring cherry blossom season. The castle grounds are adorned with approximately 1,000 cherry trees, which bloom spectacularly in mid-April. This seasonal transformation creates a stunning contrast between the soft pink blossoms and the castle’s white walls and red roof. The annual “Sparkling Night Cherry Blossom Party” adds to the magic, illuminating the blossoms and castle grounds after sunset, offering visitors a unique and enchanting experience. Autumn is another spectacular season to visit, as the surrounding park bursts into vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, making it a perfect spot for photography and peaceful strolls. In winter, the castle’s snow-covered silhouette against a crisp blue sky creates a serene and picturesque scene, enhanced by the Aizu Candle Festival that lights up the area with traditional hand-painted candles.

Visitors can also enjoy the traditional Rinkaku Tea House within the castle grounds, where they can experience Japanese tea culture in a serene setting. Throughout the year, the castle hosts various cultural events and festivals that celebrate the rich heritage of the region. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply seeking to immerse yourself in Japanese culture, Tsuruga Castle offers an enriching and memorable experience.
