About this Attraction

Geibikei Gorge, located in Ichinoseki City within Japan’s Iwate Prefecture, is a breathtaking natural landmark known for its dramatic limestone cliffs and peaceful river scenery. Stretching about two kilometers along the Satetsu River, the gorge features towering rock walls rising up to 124 meters, creating a stunning setting that attracts visitors year-round. The name “Geibikei” means “lion’s nose,” inspired by a rock formation at the gorge’s end resembling a lion’s snout. Recognized as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument, this site holds great cultural and environmental importance in Japan.

One of the best ways to experience Geibikei Gorge is by taking a traditional boat ride. Flat-bottomed boats are manually propelled by skilled boatmen using long poles, who also sing folk songs like “Geibi Oiwake” during the journey. The boat ride lasts about 40 to 50 minutes one way and offers breathtaking views of cliffs, lush greenery, and unique rock formations. Visitors often spot koi fish and ducks swimming alongside the boats, adding to the peaceful and immersive atmosphere.

Geibikei Gorge is beautiful all year round, with each season offering a unique experience. Autumn, especially from mid-October to early November, is the most popular time due to vibrant foliage in red, orange, and yellow hues. Spring brings cherry blossoms and blooming wisteria, while summer offers lush greenery and warm weather. In winter, visitors can enjoy “kotatsu-bune” boat rides, where heated boats allow passengers to savor hot pot meals while drifting through the snowy gorge — a magical experience unlike any other.

The gorge is easily accessible, with Geibikei Station nearby and visitor facilities close at hand. Whether you are a nature lover, photographer, or cultural traveler, Geibikei Gorge promises a memorable and immersive experience. Its combination of stunning landscapes and authentic local traditions makes it a must-visit destination in Japan’s Tohoku region.
