About this Attraction

Nestled in the mountainous landscapes of Miyagi Prefecture in Japan’s Tohoku region, Naruko-kyo Gorge is a breathtaking natural wonder known for its dramatic cliffs, rich vegetation, and spectacular seasonal colors. This scenic gorge stretches for approximately 2.5 kilometers and is carved by the Oyagawa River, which flows peacefully through its depths, adding a calming, rhythmic sound to the awe-inspiring views. Naruko-kyo is especially famous for its vibrant autumn foliage, making it one of the most popular koyo (fall color viewing) destinations in all of Japan.

The best time to visit Naruko-kyo is during mid to late October, when the entire gorge bursts into a fiery display of red, orange, and golden-yellow leaves. The contrast between the colorful foliage and the steep rock faces creates an unforgettable landscape that draws nature lovers, hikers, and photographers alike. Two of the most iconic spots to view the gorge are the Ofukazawa Bridge and the Naruko-kyo Resthouse observation point. These vantage points provide sweeping panoramic views of the gorge and are especially popular for capturing the passing JR Rikuu East Line trains as they cross the bridge amid a sea of autumn colors.

For those who enjoy hiking, Naruko-kyo offers several well-maintained trails that allow visitors to explore the area at their own pace. A notable walking route is the Ofukazawa trail, which stretches for about 2.2 kilometers and takes roughly 50 minutes to complete. Along the way, visitors are treated to lush forest views, towering cliffs, and crystal-clear waters.

Beyond its natural beauty, Naruko-kyo is conveniently located near Naruko Onsen, a traditional hot spring town with over a thousand years of history. After a walk through the gorge, travelers can unwind in one of the many local onsen baths and enjoy regional cuisine.

Naruko-kyo Gorge is accessible via Naruko-Onsen Station on the JR Rikuu East Line, and during the autumn season, a special shuttle bus known as “Momiji-go” runs between the station and the gorge to accommodate the influx of visitors. While the gorge can be visited year-round, note that some trails and facilities may close during the winter months due to heavy snowfall.
