About this Attraction

Lamp no Yado Aoni Onsen is a secluded ryokan nestled in the serene Aoni Valley of Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. Renowned as the “Lamp Inn,” this onsen retreat offers a tranquil escape from modern life, where guests can immerse themselves in nature and Japanese tradition. The inn is illuminated solely by oil lamps, creating a warm, nostalgic ambiance reminiscent of a bygone era. There is no electricity or cell service, allowing visitors to disconnect fully and experience a digital detox.

Established in 1929, Aoni Onsen is situated along the Aoni Stream, surrounded by virgin forests and cascading waterfalls. The inn features four natural hot springs: Kenroku-no-Yu, Takimi-no-Yu, Uchiyu, and a mixed-gender outdoor bath, Rotenburo. The baths are crafted from hiba wood, known for its antibacterial properties and pleasant aroma. The open-air Rotenburo offers a unique experience, with designated hours for women to enjoy exclusive access. The simple, colorless, and odorless hot spring water is believed to aid in recovery from exhaustion and alleviate muscle and joint pain.

Accommodations consist of traditional Japanese-style rooms equipped with tatami mats, futons, and sliding paper doors. Guests prepare their own bedding each evening, embracing the rustic charm of the ryokan. Meals are served in the communal dining hall, offering seasonal Japanese country cuisine prepared with fresh mountain vegetables and river fish. The dining experience is complemented by the soft glow of oil lamps, enhancing the authentic atmosphere.

Accessing Aoni Onsen requires a combination of train, bus, and shuttle services. From Kuroishi Station, guests take a bus to Nijino Mizuumi Park, followed by a shuttle bus to the inn. During winter months (December to March), private vehicles are not permitted due to snow conditions; advance reservations for the shuttle bus are mandatory. The journey to the inn is part of the adventure, leading visitors through picturesque landscapes to this hidden gem.

Lamp no Yado Aoni Onsen offers a rare opportunity to experience traditional Japanese hospitality in a remote and peaceful setting. Whether seeking relaxation in the hot springs, enjoying the natural surroundings, or simply disconnecting from the hustle and bustle of daily life, this onsen retreat provides a memorable and rejuvenating experience.
