About this Attraction

Towada City’s Kanchogai-dori, also known as Komakaido, is a stunning tree-lined avenue at the heart of the city’s cultural and scenic charm. Stretching 1.1 kilometres and measuring an impressive 36 metres in width, this grand boulevard is flanked by a majestic array of 168 pine trees and 157 cherry trees, creating a harmonious blend of evergreen elegance and seasonal bloom. As one of the most picturesque urban streets in Japan, Kanchogai-dori has earned nationwide recognition, selected in 1986 as one of the “100 Best Streets in Japan” and later, in 1992, included in the “New One Hundred Views of Japan,” a testament to its enduring beauty and cultural value.

Throughout the year, Kanchogai-dori offers a visual feast for locals and visitors. In spring, the cherry trees burst into a delicate canopy of pink blossoms, transforming the street into a floral tunnel that draws crowds for hanami (flower viewing). This is one of the most beloved times to walk along the boulevard, with soft petals fluttering in the breeze and the scent of sakura filling the air. During the holiday season, the street takes on a magical ambience with Christmas illuminations that sparkle across the avenue, turning it into a romantic and festive wonderland. The interplay of pine and cherry trees adorned with lights captures the essence of seasonal transformation and urban tranquillity.

What makes Kanchogai-dori truly special is its aesthetic appeal and its role as a gateway to Towada’s art and culture scene. The street leads directly to the Towada Art Centre. It features several public art installations along its pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, making it a vibrant space that seamlessly blends nature, architecture, and creativity.

Whether you visit in spring for the cherry blossoms, in winter for the light-up displays, or simply enjoy a stroll under the pine shade on a summer afternoon, Kanchogai-dori offers a peaceful yet inspiring urban experience—one that reflects the soul of Towada City and its commitment to blending tradition with modern expression.
