About this Attraction
Nestled within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakami-Sanchi in Aomori Prefecture, Lake Juniko—meaning "Twelve Lakes"—is a captivating natural area comprising 33 lakes and ponds scattered across a verdant beech forest. Despite the name, the moniker "Twelve Lakes" originates from the fact that only twelve of these bodies of water are visible from the summit of Mount Okuzure.
Among these, Aoike Pond stands out for its mesmerizing cobalt-blue waters. With a depth of approximately 10 meters, the pond's remarkable clarity allows visitors to see submerged beech branches lying at the bottom. The vivid blue hue, which intensifies under direct sunlight around midday, remains a natural mystery, adding to the pond's allure.
Visitors can embark on well-maintained hiking trails that meander through the ancient beech forest, connecting Aoike with other scenic spots like Wakitsubo Pond, known for its deep-blue waters and tranquil ambiance. A leisurely loop encompassing Aoike and Wakitsubo can be completed in about 45 minutes, offering opportunities to immerse oneself in the serene natural beauty.
The area is accessible from Juniko Station on the JR Gono Line, followed by a short bus ride to the Oku-Juniko parking area. Facilities such as the Kyororo Forest Product Center provide amenities including rest areas, local produce shops, and information centers to enhance the visitor experience.
Open from April to November, Lake Juniko and Aoike Pond offer a tranquil retreat into nature, showcasing the harmonious blend of pristine waters and lush forests that define the Shirakami-Sanchi region.
