About this Attraction
The Korekawa Stone Age Site, located in the southeastern region of Hachinohe City in Aomori Prefecture, is a remarkable archaeological treasure that provides deep insight into Japan’s ancient Jomon period. Spanning an impressive 376,000 square meters, this site was officially designated a National Historic Site in 1957 due to its immense historical significance. The Korekawa site comprises three interconnected sub-sites—Nakai, Ichioji, and Hotta—each revealing unique aspects of Jomon-era life through its excavations. Together, they form one of the most important clusters of archaeological remains from this prehistoric era. Over 4,000 artefacts have been unearthed from these sites, shedding light on the spiritual, cultural, and daily practices of the Jomon people. These findings are preserved and exhibited at the Korekawa Archaeological Institution, also known as Korekawa Jomon Kan. Among the standout pieces is the Gassyo Dogu, a clay figurine with clasped hands, symbolising ritual or prayer. This intricately crafted figure was designated a National Treasure in 2009 and remains one of the most iconic examples of Jomon-era artistry. Visitors to the Korekawa Jomon Kan can explore a fascinating array of tools, pottery, ornaments, and figurines that collectively narrate the story of a community that thrived thousands of years ago. To enrich the visitor experience, the facility offers free guided tours by knowledgeable volunteers. These tours are available in Japanese and English, although English guidance requires a reservation at least one week in advance. The museum not only serves as a gateway to Japan’s deep prehistoric past but also provides a tangible connection to the ingenuity and spirituality of early Japanese societies. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a researcher, or a curious traveller, the Korekawa Stone Age Site offers a compelling journey back in time. For more information or to arrange an English-language tour, visitors can contact the Korekawa Archaeological Institution at 0178-38-9511.
