About this Attraction

Towada Shrine, perched on the Nakayama Peninsula extending into the serene waters of Lake Towada in Aomori Prefecture, is a sacred and historic site with roots dating back to 807. Believed to have been founded by the renowned general Tamuramaro Sakagami, the shrine exudes a mystical charm. It is revered as one of the most potent spiritual spots in the Tohoku region. Visitors approach the shrine through a tranquil cedar-lined path, ascending stone steps that lead to the elegant worship hall and main shrine, where a deep sense of peace and reverence envelops the surroundings. Historically, Towada Shrine stood alongside Osorezan as one of the two holiest sites in Japan, flourishing as a centre for spiritual training and ascetic practices. Before the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism during the Meiji era, the shrine symbolised the water god beliefs deeply rooted in northern Japan’s culture. According to legend, a monk once fought fiercely with a colossal serpent dwelling in Lake Towada. After triumphing over the beast, he transformed into a divine dragon known as Seiryu Daigongen, who is now enshrined here as a guardian spirit. At the back of the shrine lies a unique fortune-telling site, accessible via a cliff-side iron ladder—now closed for safety reasons. Pilgrims used to descend to this secluded spot to float "Oyori-gami" (special fortune-telling paper) on the lake’s surface, where a sinking paper signified the granting of one’s wish. Although the original location is inaccessible, the ritual can still be performed on the nearby Omaega-hama beach or at home, by placing the paper in a sink or bath. Whether seeking spiritual energy, cultural insight, or a moment of reflection, Towada Shrine offers a profound and enchanting experience.
