About this Attraction

Sukayu Onsen, nestled in the Hakkōda Mountains of Aomori Prefecture, is a historic hot spring resort renowned for its therapeutic waters and traditional ambiance. Established in 1684, the onsen's origin is rooted in a tale where hunters observed a wounded deer rejuvenating in the spring's waters, leading to its initial name, "Shikayu," meaning "deer hot spring." Over time, it evolved into "Sukayu" and gained prominence as a healing retreat.

The centerpiece of Sukayu Onsen is the "Sen-nin-buro" or "Bath of a Thousand Bathers," a vast mixed-gender bath constructed entirely from hiba wood, a type of Japanese cypress native to the region. Spanning approximately 260 square meters, this bath offers a unique communal bathing experience, reflecting Japan's historical practices. While mixed bathing is the norm, designated hours are reserved exclusively for women to ensure comfort for all guests.

The onsen's waters are characterized by their strong acidity and sulfur content, believed to aid in alleviating ailments such as neuralgia, rheumatism, and digestive issues. The combination of mineral-rich waters and the serene mountain environment contributes to its reputation as a therapeutic haven.

Situated at an elevation of 925 meters, Sukayu Onsen is enveloped by nature's beauty, offering picturesque views throughout the seasons. Notably, the area is recognized as one of the snowiest inhabited places globally, receiving an average annual snowfall of 17.6 meters. Despite the heavy snow, the onsen remains accessible year-round, providing a cozy retreat amidst the winter landscape.

Beyond its baths, Sukayu Onsen serves as a gateway to various outdoor activities. Visitors can embark on the Sukayu Nature Trail, a 1.7-kilometer route that meanders through geothermal features like Jigokunuma Pond and offers insights into the region's diverse flora.

For those seeking an authentic Japanese onsen experience steeped in history and natural splendor, Sukayu Onsen stands as a testament to enduring traditions and the timeless allure of communal bathing.
