About this Attraction

Stepping into the Holy Emmanuel Church in Moratuwa was like walking into a piece of history frozen in time. The towering Gothic Revival structure, grand arches and intricate stained-glass windows, immediately drew me in. As someone who appreciates historical landmarks, I could feel the weight of over 125 years of devotion and tradition within its walls.

The Legacy of Jeronis de Soysa

One of the most fascinating aspects of this church is its origin. The name Jeronis de Soysa echoes through the history of this place. His story is transformed—from an individual devoted to Buddhist studies to a philanthropist who embraced Christianity. His vision and generosity made this church a reality, leaving behind a spiritual sanctuary that continues to thrive. As I stood there, gazing at the high vaulted ceilings and the old wooden pews, I couldn’t help but think about the unwavering faith and dedication that went into building this monumental place of worship.

Discovering the Roots of Anglicanism in Moratuwa

The Anglican presence in Moratuwa dates back to 1799, much earlier than I had initially thought. Learning that the present general cemetery behind the church was once home to an old Dutch-era chapel known as "Brownrigg Palliya" added another layer of historical significance. This small but pivotal structure laid the foundation for Anglicanism in the region, with services conducted in Sinhala—a sign of how Christianity and local traditions blended harmoniously.

The Church’s Grand Construction

One of the most awe-inspiring moments of my visit was standing before the foundation stone, which was laid on December 27, 1857, by Bishop James Chapman. This marked the beginning of a three-year-long construction process, which ultimately led to the completion of the Holy Emmanuel Church on December 18, 1860. Reading about how Jeromis de Soysa and his brother, Susew de Soysa, funded the entire project—amounting to over £5338 – 5s at the time—showed their deep commitment to faith and community upliftment.

Architectural Splendor and Spiritual Ambience

Beyond its historical value, the church’s Gothic Revival architecture is mesmerizing. The tall, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and stained-glass windows filter in coloured light, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Walking through its grand interior, I could sense the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into every brick and carving. The wooden pews, the large organ, and the stone altar reflect an era of architectural brilliance rarely seen in modern buildings.

A Sacred Space That Stands the Test of Time

Holy Emmanuel Church continues to be a place of worship, community gatherings, and celebrations. Despite the passage of time, it remains a spiritual pillar for the people of Moratuwa. Whether it’s a Sunday service, a wedding, or a quiet moment of reflection, the church still holds an indescribable power that draws people in. As I left the church, I felt a renewed admiration for its history, people, and incredible legacy that still stands strong.

For history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, or those simply seeking a peaceful sanctuary, the Holy Emmanuel Church in Moratuwa is a place that should not be missed. It is more than just a religious site; it is a living testament to faith, resilience, and heritage.
