About this Attraction

Stepping into the Sri Lanka Air Force Museum in Ratmalana felt like entering a time capsule of aviation history, taking me on a journey from the early days of military aviation to modern aerial warfare. As Sri Lanka’s only national aviation museum, this place is a dream destination for aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone fascinated by the evolution of flight.

A Fascinating Introduction to the Museum

Located within the Ratmalana Air Force Base, the museum is easily accessible and offers an immersive experience of Sri Lanka’s aviation legacy. When I walked in, I was greeted by large aircraft on display, some of which had been used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II and later by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).

From historic fighter jets to massive cargo planes, the outdoor exhibit alone was a thrilling start. I was particularly drawn to the aircraft preservation and storage unit, where vintage planes have been carefully restored, preserving their original details.

Exploring the Museum’s Highlights

Walking through the museum, I realized how meticulously the SLAF has documented its history. Each exhibit narrates a different era, from the RAF’s presence in Sri Lanka during WWII to the modern SLAF’s role in national security. Some of the most memorable exhibits included:

Iconic Aircraft Display – Seeing the Saladin Armored Car, T55 Armored Vehicle, and water-and-land-capable fighter tanks up close was an unforgettable experience. Each aircraft carried its unique history, with detailed information on their missions and roles in combat.

Air Force Combat Gear & Weaponry – The 22mm rocket launcher mounted on a military truck and various artillery used in past conflicts showcased Sri Lanka’s evolving military strategies over the years.

Aviation Research Reference Library – Opened in 2013, this library is a treasure trove for aviation scholars. It contains books, research papers, and historical records that provide an in-depth understanding of the technological advancements in aviation.

The Craft Lab – This section fascinated me the most. Introduced in 2014, it specializes in handcrafted, wooden scale models of famous aircraft—a rare and artistic tribute to aviation history.

A Glimpse into Sri Lanka’s Air Force Evolution

One of the most impactful sections of the museum was the detailed timeline of the SLAF. Seeing the transformation from a small air unit into a powerful military force was inspiring. The displays featured:

✔️ The SLAF’s involvement in national security & disaster relief
✔️ The role of the Air Force during Sri Lanka’s civil war
✔️ Modern air combat technologies & strategic defense systems

The museum also provides an insightful look into the role of the RAF in Sri Lanka during WWII, emphasizing the island’s strategic importance in military aviation history.

Interactive Experiences – Becoming a Pilot for a Day

One of the most exciting moments of my visit was participating in a shooting simulation. Under the guidance of skilled SLAF instructors, I tested my skills with air rifles in a safe and controlled environment.

There were both standing and seated firing positions, making it an engaging hands-on activity for visitors. After the session, I even took home my target sheet as a souvenir—a unique and memorable experience!
