About this Attraction

Tucked away in the rugged landscapes of the Knuckles Mountain Range, Thunhisgala is one of Sri Lanka’s best-kept hiking secrets. Standing at 1617 meters above sea level, it is the sixth-highest peak in the range, offering a challenging yet deeply rewarding trekking experience. Unlike its more famous counterparts, Thunhisgala remains largely untouched, making it a paradise for serious hikers and nature lovers.

The Journey Begins – Getting to Thunhisgala

I had three potential routes to reach Thunhisgala:

Via Wattegama, Bambarella, and Lebanon Estate – The most accessible and scenic trail
Via Meemure – A more challenging and less-travelled path through dense forests
Via Riverston, Atanwala, and Duwili Ella – A demanding yet picturesque route

I chose the Wattegama–Bambarella trail, known for its stunning scenery and well-defined paths. Catching a bus from Kandy to Wattegama and then hopping onto another towards Bambarella, I finally reached Lebanon Estate—the last human settlement before the wilderness took over.

Into the Wild – Hiking Through Dense Forest and Historic Landmarks

The hike began gently, winding through tea plantations and misty woodlands. As I ventured deeper, I could feel the forest's isolation enveloping me. The trail led past Rathnagiriya Mountain and Wind Mountain, offering breathtaking views of rolling hills and distant valleys.

Midway, I arrived at KMP Wadiya, an abandoned cardamom planter’s house from the late 20th century. Nestled in the heart of the jungle, this place whispered stories of a bygone era when cardamom cultivation thrived before being banned to protect the Knuckles ecosystem.

Camping at KMP Wadiya was an unexpected highlight. The rustic wooden cabins and fire-lit meals under the stars created an authentic wilderness experience.

The Final Push – Climbing to the Summit of Thunhisgala

The final ascent was the toughest. The trail became steeper, narrower, and wilder, cutting through towering dwarf trees and thick undergrowth. The humidity was intense, and the occasional rustling in the bushes hinted at hidden wildlife.

After a gruelling two-hour climb, I finally emerged at the summit of Thunhisgala—and the view was worth every step.

A View Unlike Any Other – The Panoramic Glory of Thunhisgala

The 360-degree view from the top was nothing short of breathtaking. From here, I could see:

The Five Peaks of Knuckles – Majestic and shrouded in mist
Lakegala – The famous pyramid-shaped rock
Wamarapugala & Gombaniya – Two lesser-known but striking peaks
Manigala & the vast valleys below

The silence of the summit, broken only by the whispers of the wind, made this moment truly special. I felt a deep connection to nature, surrounded by untamed beauty and raw wilderness.
