The journey to Budugala was as mesmerizing as the destination itself. From Balangoda town, we followed the winding roads, passing through rolling hills, lush green forests, and breathtaking landscapes. The Diyavinna road led us through an untouched countryside, where nature unfolded in its purest form.

As we drove, the Walawe River flowed alongside the road, its clear waters glistening in the sunlight. Locals bathed and washed in the river, and children played joyfully along its banks. Small stone bridges (Edandas) crossed the river, connecting different parts of the village.

With every passing turn, the air grew fresher, the surroundings more peaceful, and the excitement deeper—I knew we were getting closer to something special.

Arriving at Budugala – A Place of Ancient Mystique

After a 45-km drive, we finally reached the ancient village of Budugala. The temple was nestled adjacent to the Mahawalathenna plateau, surrounded by nature’s embrace. As soon as I stepped onto the temple grounds, I felt an undeniable sense of tranquility and history.

The ruins were scattered across the sacred land, some hidden beneath thick foliage, others standing proudly as remnants of a bygone era. I was standing in a place that had witnessed centuries of devotion and transformation, and it was humbling.

Exploring the Ruins – Echoes of the Past

The first sight that caught my attention was the polished granite foundations—two large, rectangular stone platforms connected by a narrow stone bridge. Were these the remnants of an ancient palace? A monastery? A gathering place for monks? The questions lingered as I walked along the weathered stone paths, feeling the weight of history beneath my feet.

Further ahead, stone stairways with simple balustrades led the way to elevated ruins. Some steps were worn down by time, their edges softened by centuries of use. As I climbed, I imagined the monks, kings, and scholars who had ascended these steps in devotion.

The steep granite stairway took me higher into the ruins. Each turn revealed new mysteries—stone pillars, remnants of walls, and hidden artefacts that whispered tales of an ancient civilization. The deeper I explored, the more I realized how little we know about the past.

The Spiritual Aura of Budugala Temple

Beyond the ruins, the main Budugala temple stood as a sanctuary of peace. Unlike the ruins, which spoke of history, this place radiated spiritual energy and devotion. The centrepiece of the temple was a massive Buddha statue carved into the rock.

The monks, clad in saffron robes, tiptoed through the temple grounds, their presence adding to the serenity of the place. The temple was an active place of worship, where prayers, rituals, and meditation continued as they had for centuries.

The ancient rock tunnel (Umaga) was one of the most intriguing features. According to legend, King Walagamba used this tunnel as a hideout during times of war. Although the entrance was now blocked, I couldn’t help but wonder—where did it lead? Was it connected to other hidden temples?

A Connection to Nature – The Surrounding Beauty of Budugala

After soaking in the spiritual essence of the temple, I took a moment to appreciate the natural beauty around me.

✔ The fertile paddy fields stretched into the distance, a reminder of the region’s agricultural heritage.
✔ The fruit groves, with their vibrant colours, added charm to the surroundings.
✔ The ancient rock arch, formed by two massive boulders leaning against each other, was a historical landmark and a place of rest for pilgrims.

Standing there amidst centuries-old ruins, sacred Buddhist relics, and breathtaking landscapes, I felt a deep connection to the past, the land, and the people who once walked here.

Budugala Rajamaha Viharaya is not just an archaeological site but a spiritual retreat, a historical puzzle, and a breathtaking natural wonder. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a pilgrim, or a traveller looking for hidden gems, this place offers an experience unlike any other.

As I left the temple grounds, I took one last look at the ruins and serene environment. Something about Budugala lingered in my heart—a quiet reminder of the past, a whisper of history, and a call to return.
