About this Attraction

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s central region, Pettigala (also called Pethiyagala) is a rare destination that seamlessly blends history, adventure, and breathtaking landscapes. As someone who loves offbeat locations and hidden gems, my journey to Pettigala was an unforgettable experience that offered serene natural beauty, historical discoveries, and a challenging yet rewarding hike.

Getting to Pettigala: A Scenic Journey

Pettigala is just 20 km from Kandy, making it a perfect getaway for anyone looking to escape the city's hustle and immerse themselves in nature. My journey began with a beautiful drive to Digana, passing lush greenery, misty hills, and quaint villages.

From Digana, I hopped on a tuk-tuk to reach the base of Pettigala Mountain—an adventure in itself! The ride was thrilling as we navigated through winding roads, dense forests, and occasional glimpses of the Victoria Reservoir shimmering in the sunlight.

Upon reaching the Bambaragala Temple, the hike's starting point, I knew this journey would be as spiritual as it was adventurous.

Bambaragala Temple: A Walk Through Time

Before beginning the 5 km hike, I spent some time at Bambaragala Temple, a historical Buddhist sanctuary dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries A.D. The ancient caves, monastic ruins, and stunning paintings tell stories of Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage.

Two highlights stood out:

  1. Indrasala Guhava Cave – A sacred meditation cave believed to have been visited by monks centuries ago.
  2. Sithuwam Lena – An incredible rock cave adorned with ancient murals, some depicting Buddha’s travels.

Walking through this historical site, I could feel a sense of calm and reverence, almost as if the whispers of ancient monks still echoed within the stone walls.

The Hike to Pettigala: A Journey Through Nature

The hike to Pettigala’s summit was nothing short of exhilarating. The trail was a mix of gentle slopes and rugged pathways, winding through thick forests, towering boulders, and shaded pathways filled with chirping birds and rustling leaves.

The trek was moderate in difficulty, but there were a few steep sections where I had to climb over rocks and hold onto tree roots for support. Hiking shoes are a must if you plan to visit!

With every step, the view kept getting better. Sunlight streamed through the dense canopy, illuminating the trail with a golden glow, and the occasional cool breeze kept me refreshed.

Reaching the Summit: A View Like No Other

After about an hour of hiking, I finally reached the peak of Pettigala, and the panoramic view took my breath away.

From the summit, I could see:

The majestic Knuckles Mountain Range stretching into the distance
The historical town of Teldeniya, a glimpse into the region’s past
The breathtaking Victoria Reservoir, its blue waters reflecting the sky
Endless rolling hills and lush greenery, as far as the eye could see

It was one of those rare moments of absolute silence when all I could hear was the wind and the rustling of leaves. I found a flat rock and simply sat there, taking in the grandeur of nature and letting the stillness of the moment wash over me.

A Sunset to Remember

As the day turned to dusk, Pettigala transformed into a magical canvas. The sky burst into orange, pink, and gold shades, casting long shadows across the valley. The silhouetted mountains against the fiery horizon made it one of the most beautiful sunsets ever.

As the cool evening breeze set in, I reluctantly descended, carrying with me a heart full of memories and a newfound appreciation for Sri Lanka’s untouched beauty.
