About this Attraction

Hiking to Single Tree Hill in Nuwara Eliya was an unforgettable experience. It combined breathtaking landscapes, serene surroundings, and a glimpse into Sri Lanka's colonial history. At 6,890 feet above sea level, Single Tree Hill is the seventh-highest mountain in Sri Lanka. It offers the best vantage point for witnessing the majestic sunrise over Nuwara Eliya and the Haggada Mountain Range.

Starting the Hike: Into the Tea Country

The hike began early morning—the best time for clear skies and ideal birdwatching conditions. The morning mist made the surroundings almost mystical as I trekked through lush tea plantations. The well-maintained trails meander through the plantation, and the scent of fresh tea leaves accompanied me throughout the journey.

The climb took about 90 minutes, and while it wasn’t too steep, the last stretch was challenging, with a steep incline leading to the summit. However, the cool climate of Nuwara Eliya made the hike refreshing rather than exhausting.

A Peaceful Pause: The Buddhist Temple

About halfway up, I came across a peaceful Buddhist temple—a perfect spot to rest and take in the tranquility. The temple, surrounded by greenery, had stone stairs leading to its main hall. The stillness here was striking. I took some time to walk around, appreciating the simple yet serene architecture, which provided a calming break from the climb.

Reaching the Summit: The Lone Tree and Spectacular Views

As I reached the summit, I was greeted by the iconic single tree—the landmark that gives Single Tree Hill its name. Standing tall against the backdrop of blue skies and rolling hills, the tree seemed almost symbolic—a lone guardian overlooking the vast landscape.

The panoramic 360-degree views from the top were breathtaking. The town of Nuwara Eliya looked picture-perfect with its colonial-style houses and sprawling gardens. I could see the Pidurutalagala Mountain Range, the Haggada Mountains, and on a clear day, even the Indian Ocean shimmering in the distance—over 80 kilometres away.

A Paradise for Birdwatchers and Wildlife Lovers

The summit also offers a fantastic opportunity for birdwatching. I was lucky to spot the endemic whistling thrush, the vibrant yellow-eared bulbul, and several other species fluttering through the trees. Wildlife enthusiasts can also see sambar deer and barking deer roaming these highlands.

Descending the Hill: More Scenic Surprises

On the way down, I followed a different path through more tea plantations, which offered panoramic views of Gregory Lake and Nuwara Eliya town. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can venture further down the hill for unique perspectives of the surrounding landscape.

Hiking Tips from My Experience

  • Footwear: Comfortable hiking shoes with a good grip are essential, especially for the steep sections.
  • Weather: The weather can change rapidly. I recommend carrying a raincoat or umbrella, especially hiking during the rainy season.
  • Water: Carry plenty of water and snacks. The trail is manageable but can be tiring.
  • Safety: Always stay on the marked trails and avoid hiking alone, particularly after dark.
  • Best Season: The dry season (December to March) offers the best weather and unobstructed views.
  • Wildlife Precautions: Watch out for leeches if you’re hiking during the wet season. Applying insect repellent is a smart move.
