About this Attraction

Visiting Hathmala Ella, also known as Sathmala Ella, was an unforgettable experience that I didn’t expect would leave such a lasting impression. As the 68th most eminent waterfall in Sri Lanka, I was curious to see what made it so special.

Located in Deniyaya, this seven-step waterfall instantly took my breath away. The sound of water cascading down the rocks, combined with the lush greenery surrounding the falls, felt like a perfect escape from the chaos of everyday life.

The Journey to Hathmala Ella: A Scenic Adventure

The trip itself was part of the adventure. I took public transport from Deniyaya town, which was affordable and convenient. After a short ride, I followed the Deniyaya-Pallegama Road, which led me through peaceful countryside views.

Though there were no signboards, I had been told to look out for the Hathmala Ella Road sign just before the Pallegama Bridge. Sure enough, after about 7 kilometres, I spotted it. From there, I continued down a narrow path that ended in someone’s garden — quite a unique starting point for an adventure!

A Short Trek with Big Rewards

From the end of the road, the real journey began. The walk to the waterfall was relatively easy, though the uneven terrain reminded me why good hiking shoes are always a good idea.

As I descended a steep hill, I could hear the roar of the waterfall before I saw it. The anticipation grew with each step until finally, there it was—Hathmala Ella, in all its majestic glory.

The Magnificence of Hathmala Ella

Standing at 45 meters high and 10 meters wide, Hathmala Ella is the highest waterfall in the Ginganga River. "Hathmala" (seven steps) perfectly describes how the water flows in seven distinct cascades.

Each waterfall segment had its own character, creating a breathtaking display of power and beauty. The sound of rushing water, the chirping of birds, and the rustling leaves made me feel like I was in a hidden paradise.

A Moment of Serenity: Nature’s Symphony

I found a quiet spot to sit and soak in the view. The serene atmosphere was unlike anything I had felt in a long time. With no crowds and only the sounds of nature, it felt like Hathmala Ella was putting on a private show just for me.

The cool mist from the waterfall was refreshing, and the tranquil vibe made me lose track of time. It was one of those rare moments where you feel completely at peace, surrounded by nature’s untouched beauty.

Environmental Reflections: Preserving the Beauty

While I was amazed by the falls' natural beauty, I couldn’t ignore the signs of human impact. Unfortunately, litter had accumulated in certain areas, a stark reminder of how irresponsible tourism can threaten such pristine places.

I took time to collect a few pieces of trash, hoping to lead by example. This experience reminded me that we all are responsible for protecting these natural wonders for future generations.
