About this Attraction

Visiting Sangupiddy Bridge was an experience that blended history, architecture, and breathtaking views. This impressive structure, spanning the Jaffna Lagoon, is crucial in connecting the Jaffna Peninsula with the mainland, significantly reducing travel time and bringing communities closer.

The Journey to Sangupiddy Bridge

Starting from Jaffna town, I took a leisurely 20 km drive towards the bridge. The road was peaceful, flanked by lush greenery and local villages that gave me a glimpse into northern Sri Lankan life. Opting for a tuk-tuk, I enjoyed the cool breeze and the friendly conversations with the driver, who shared stories of the region’s history and culture.

First Impressions: A Stunning Architectural Marvel

As we approached, the Sangupiddy Bridge emerged gracefully over the lagoon, with the calm waters reflecting the sky like a giant mirror. Stretching 288 meters long and 7.35 meters wide, this steel girder bridge, with its sleek, modern design, seamlessly blended with the natural beauty of its surroundings.

The gentle sound of the wind and the stillness of the lagoon created a serene atmosphere. Standing there, I couldn’t help but admire the engineering marvel that has become a symbol of unity for the region.

Walking Across History

Walking along the bridge, I learned about its fascinating history—how initial plans for a causeway were drawn up during the British colonial period in 1932 but faced opposition from local fishermen and salt producers. It wasn’t until after the civil war, in 2010, that construction resumed, culminating in the bridge's opening in 2011.

It struck me how this bridge symbolized resilience—a connection envisioned nearly a century ago, finally realized to bring people together after years of conflict and division.

Breathtaking Views and Tranquility

The view from the bridge was simply breathtaking. The expansive Jaffna Lagoon stretched out on either side, with mangrove forests dotting the landscape. The clouds' reflection on the water’s surface made it seem like walking in the sky.

As I paused to take it all in, I watched local fishermen casting their nets in the lagoon—an age-old tradition that continues despite the modern infrastructure. It was a beautiful contrast between past and present, between nature and human innovation.

Sunset Over Sangupiddy

I stayed until sunset, and I’m so glad I did. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky lit up with gold, pink, and violet shades. The bridge lights flickered onglowing gently on the still waters below.

It was a peaceful moment, watching the evening light reflected on the steel structure, knowing that this bridge now connects lives, making journeys shorter and futures brighter.

Why Sangupiddy Bridge Left a Lasting Impression

Visiting Sangupiddy Bridge wasn’t just about seeing a road bridge—it was about witnessing a symbol of unity, progress, and hope. The bridge not only shortened travel time by 110 km, connecting the south to the north of Sri Lanka, but also opened doors for trade, tourism, and connection in a region long affected by conflict.

The combination of history, scenic beauty, and architectural brilliance made this trip unforgettable. If you ever find yourself in northern Sri Lanka, don’t miss the chance to stand on this bridge, take in the views, and reflect on the stories it holds.

Sangupiddy Bridge is where nature’s tranquillity meets human resilience and connection.
