About this Attraction

As I arrived at the serene village of Ranawana in the Kandy District, the peaceful ambience was immediately palpable. Nestled amidst lush greenery and gentle hills, the Ranawana Royal Temple stood majestically, inviting me into its sacred grounds. The cool breeze mingled with the soft rustling of Bodhi leaves, creating an atmosphere of calm even before I stepped inside the temple premises.

The Ascent – A Journey of Reflection

Reaching the temple required a climb of around 500-600 steps, but it felt more like a spiritual journey than a mere physical effort. Each step, surrounded by statues and serene natural beauty, symbolized leaving behind worldly distractions. The path was lined with various depictions from Buddhist teachings, and as I ascended, I reflected on the simplicity and depth of the Buddha's teachings.

Encounter with the Majestic Walking Buddha Statue

At the summit, I was greeted by one of the tallest walking Buddha statues in the world. The sheer scale of the statue was awe-inspiring. The serene expression on the Buddha’s face and graceful posture emanated an overwhelming sense of peace. Standing there, with panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forests, I felt humbled and uplifted—a rare combination that words struggle to capture.

Exploring the Sacred Grounds

The temple grounds span about 1 km, and walking through them felt like stepping into a living canvas of Buddhist history and philosophy. The temple pays homage to the 28 Buddhas, each represented under different species of Bodhi trees. It was fascinating to see how each tree had its unique significance, symbolizing the universal nature of enlightenment.

Architectural Elegance with Historical Depth

One of my highlights was the replica of the Northern Gateway of the Sanchi Stupa from India. The intricate carvings and detailed artistry left me in awe, not just for their beauty but for the deep historical connection they represented. It felt like a bridge between two ancient Buddhist civilizations, seamlessly blending Sri Lankan and Indian heritage.

The Story of Prince Siddhartha’s Renunciation

Another captivating part of the temple was the beautifully crafted depiction of Prince Siddhartha’s renunciation. The statues of Prince Siddhartha, his loyal minister Channa, and the faithful horse Kanthaka vividly narrated the pivotal moment when he left behind his royal life in search of the ultimate truth. Standing before this scene, I felt a profound respect for the courage and determination that sparked a spiritual revolution over 2,500 years ago.

Community Spirit and Spiritual Education

Beyond its historical and spiritual significance, the Ranawana Royal Temple plays an active role in the community through its Dhamma School. Watching young children in their crisp white attire attend lessons under the guidance of compassionate monks was heartwarming. It reinforced the temple’s role as a relic of the past and a vibrant centre for spiritual growth and learning.

A Place for Reflection

After exploring, I found a quiet spot under a Bodhi tree to sit and reflect. The peaceful environment, punctuated only by the occasional chirping of birds and the soft chanting from the temple, created the perfect space for meditation. I felt an indescribable sense of inner calm as if the temple’s ancient energy had gently wrapped itself around me.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Ranawana Royal Temple was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was a spiritual experience that touched my heart. Combining breathtaking views, rich history, sacred art, and Buddhist traditions made it unforgettable. Whether seeking spiritual insight, historical knowledge, or a peaceful retreat, this temple offers a unique and transformative experience. I left with a lighter heart, a quieter mind, and a deep gratitude for having walked the sacred grounds of such a remarkable place.
