About this Attraction

As I approached Gongala Kanda, nestled in the heart of the Sabaragamuwa Province, the towering silhouette of the mountain against the blue sky immediately captured my attention. Known as the 15th-highest peak in Sri Lanka, its rugged beauty stood out, with dense greenery carpeting its slopes. The air grew cooler as I got closer, and the crisp mountain breeze carried the faint scent of wildflowers and fresh earth—a refreshing change from the city’s hustle.

The Journey to the Summit

The trek to the summit was both challenging and exhilarating. The path led through dense jungle trails, about 2 km long, where every turn revealed something new—thick clusters of trees, hidden streams, and the occasional rustle hinting at wildlife nearby. Sticking to the marked trails is important because venturing off-path can be risky due to the dense foliage and uneven terrain. The climb was steep, but the anticipation of reaching the top kept me motivated.

Breathtaking Views from the Top

Reaching the summit was a moment I’ll never forget. The panoramic view stretched endlessly, with the Sinharaja Forest Reserve to the west and the Rakwana, Balangoda, and Udawalawe Reserves visible to the east and north. The sight of these lush green expanses, bathed in sunlight, was breathtaking. The cool breeze at the summit carried whispers of history as if the mountain itself had stories to tell from ancient times.

The Iconic Doppler Radar Tower

One of the highlights was the abandoned Doppler radar tower, perched at the highest point of Gongala. Though no longer operational, climbing the tower provided an even more extensive view of the surrounding landscapes. Standing above the clouds, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and connection with nature.

A Glimpse into History and Culture

The name "Gongala," derived from the Sinhala word “gongaliya” meaning "deer," is said to reflect the mountain’s deer-like shape. It was fascinating to learn that Gongala was once a hunting ground for Sri Lankan kings and served as an ancient landmark for traders and travellers. The cultural significance of this place adds another layer of depth to the experience, making it not just a trek but a journey through history.

The Rich Biodiversity of Gongala

Gongala’s proximity to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, means the area is teeming with wildlife. During the hike, I was lucky enough to spot colourful birds, and rare insects and even hear the distant calls of monkeys. The biodiversity here is astounding, with unique flora and fauna that make it a paradise for nature lovers.

The Heart of Sri Lanka’s Media Transmission

It was intriguing to discover that Gongala Kanda also serves as Sri Lanka’s main transmission centre for TV and radio. Knowing that over 10 TV channels and 29 radio stations broadcast from this mountain added a modern twist to its ancient charm. The fact that a place so rich in natural beauty also plays a key role in the country’s media landscape was fascinating.

Final Thoughts

My adventure to Gongala Mountain was more than just a hike—an immersive experience blending nature, history, and culture. The breathtaking views, rich biodiversity, and historical significance made it a journey I’ll cherish forever. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a history buff, or someone looking to connect with nature, Gongala Kanda offers an unforgettable experience. If you ever find yourself in Sabaragamuwa, don’t miss the chance to explore this hidden gem—Gongala will leave you with memories etched in your heart.
