As I stepped into Pettah’s bustling streets, a magnificent structure caught my eye—the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque, commonly known as the Red Masjid. Nestled amidst the lively Second Cross Street, this iconic mosque immediately stood out with its vibrant red and white candy-striped exterior, starkly contrasting the surrounding buildings.
Tracing Back Over a Century of Faith
Built in 1908, the mosque carries deep historical significance. It was founded by Indian Muslim traders who saw the need for a central place of worship in Colombo’s thriving business hub. The devotion of these early merchants, who contributed to the mosque’s construction, continues to be felt today. Walking through its entrance, I couldn’t help but admire the dedication and faith that shaped this sacred space.
A Masterpiece of Indo-Saracenic Architecture
Designed by Habibu Lebbe Saibu Lebbe, a self-taught architect, the Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque is a true blend of Indo-Islamic, Gothic, and Neo-classical influences. The two-story structure, adorned with signature domes and intricate detailing, is majestic and inviting. I was amazed to learn that before Colombo’s skyline was filled with modern buildings, sailors navigating towards the port would recognize the mosque as a key landmark of the city.

Inside, the atmosphere was calm and spiritual, starkly contrasting with the hustle and bustle of Pettah’s markets. Worshippers gathered for their five daily prayers, while Friday Jummah prayers saw a large congregation filling the mosque’s vast space. The expansion in 1975, thanks to the Haji Omar Trust, has allowed the mosque to accommodate up to 10,000 devotees, reflecting the growth of Colombo’s Muslim community over the years.
