Dive in Rannamaari Wreck | Maldives

  • Scuba Diving

About This Activity

The Rannamaari Wreck is one of the most unique shipwrecks in the Maldives, not because of its purpose-built design but because of the unexpected circumstances surrounding its sinking. Originally intended to be deliberately scuttled as an artificial reef, this dredger vessel sank accidentally in 1999, just off the coast of Angsana Ihuru in North Malé Atoll.

Despite its unplanned descent, the wreck has become a rich and thriving marine habitat, quickly colonized by coral growth, marine species, and macro life. Today, the Rannamaari Wreck is a popular dive site for those looking to experience a well-preserved shipwreck in a moderate depth range with stunning biodiversity.

Diving Experience

  • Depth: 26 meters
  • Location: Near Angsana Ihuru, North Malé Atoll
  • Best For: Beginner to intermediate wreck divers
  • Diving Conditions: Mild currents, excellent visibility

The Rannamaari Wreck is one of the easiest wreck dives in the Maldives, making it an ideal site for beginners and those new to wreck penetration. Resting at a depth of 26 meters, the wreck is accessible without requiring technical diving certifications, allowing for extended bottom time while exploring its structure.

Unlike many older wrecks that have deteriorated significantly, the Rannamaari is still well intact, with its bridge, hull, and deck structures visible. The vessel sits upright on the sandy seabed, allowing divers to safely explore its exterior and interior.

Divers can swim through open compartments, discovering hidden marine life within the ship’s crevices. The Rannamaari Wreck also features small openings where divers can observe schools of fish darting in and out, adding an element of mystery to the dive.

Marine Life Around the Wreck

Since its sinking, the Rannamaari Wreck has become a bustling underwater ecosystem, offering a mix of pelagic fish, reef species, and macro life. Expect to see:

  • Fusiliers and jackfish swimming around the wreck’s deck
  • Parrotfish and angelfish feeding on algae-covered surfaces
  • Trevally and Barracuda patrolling the area
  • Moray eels and lionfish hiding within the wreck’s hollowed-out spaces
  • Nudibranchs, pipefish, and shrimps make it an excellent site for macro photographers

One of the highlights of the Rannamaari Wreck is that stingrays and reef sharks are occasionally spotted in the sandy patches nearby, adding a touch of excitement to the dive.

Best Time to Dive

The Rannamaari Wreck is diveable year-round, but the best conditions occur from November to April when the waters are most straightforward and the currents are calm. Since the wreck is at 26 meters, divers can comfortably explore the site without deep-diving techniques, making it an excellent spot for casual and training wreck dives.
