Stepping into Muthurajawela Marsh, located just 18 kilometres from Negombo, felt like entering a world untouched by time. As Sri Lanka’s largest saline wetland, spanning over 6,000 hectares, this incredible ecosystem is a haven for wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers.
A Boat Safari Through Lush Mangroves
The best way to experience Muthurajawela Marsh is by taking a two-hour boat ride, which begins at the visitor centre. Gliding along the calm, winding waterways, I was immediately surrounded by dense mangroves, their roots dipping into the brackish water, providing shelter for various creatures. The boat gently navigated through this green labyrinth, unveiling the marsh’s hidden wonders.
A Sanctuary for Birds and Wildlife
This wetland is home to over 75 species of birds, and I was lucky enough to spot kingfishers, cormorants, purple herons, Indian pond herons, and elegant egrets perched gracefully along the waterways. From September to April, migratory birds also visit, adding to the marsh’s vibrant avian life.
Beyond the birds, I was thrilled to see giant monitor lizards basking on the riverbanks, Sri Lanka’s largest snake—the python—coiled lazily on tree branches, and even a marsh mugger crocodile lurking beneath the water’s surface. Butterflies fluttered around the thick vegetation, their colourful wings adding a delicate charm to the untamed wilderness.
The Healing Touch of Nature
Adding to the marsh’s biodiversity, medicinal plants thrive here, and locals use them for traditional remedies. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth and fresh greenery, making the entire experience feel deeply rejuvenating and immersive.

Muthurajawela Marsh is a hidden treasure, offering an unforgettable wildlife experience just a short drive from Colombo. Whether you’re a birdwatcher, a wildlife photographer, or simply a traveller looking to escape nature, this remarkable wetland is a must-visit destination.
