About this Attraction

During my travels along Sri Lanka’s southwestern coast, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Ambalangoda Mask Museum, which breathes life into Sri Lanka’s rich mask-making tradition. Known for its hand-carved, hand-painted masks, Ambalangoda is the heart of this ancient art, where skilled artisans continue to preserve a cultural legacy that spans centuries.

The museum isn’t just a display of beautiful masks—it’s an immersive experience that reveals the history, symbolism, and rituals behind Sri Lanka’s vibrant dance and exorcism traditions.

The Cultural Significance of Masks in Ambalangoda

As I entered the museum, I was instantly drawn to the colourful and intricate masks hanging on the walls. These masks are pivotal in Sri Lankan dance forms such as Kolam dance, Sanni Yakuma exorcism rituals, and traditional processions.

The Kolam performances feature masks that tell satirical stories, often mocking colonial rulers and local characters. Meanwhile, the Sanni masks, used in exorcism rituals, represent various ailments and supernatural beings. Each mask is deeply symbolic, crafted with stories and traditions passed down for generations.

Meeting the Artisans: The Mask-Making Process

One of the most fascinating parts of my visit was seeing master craftsmen at work in the adjoining workshop. The artisans start with lightweight kaduru wood, which is carved, dried, and meticulously hand-painted using natural pigments.

Each mask requires exceptional skill and patience, and watching the process gave me a deep appreciation for this centuries-old craft. Some artisans have dedicated their entire lives to keeping this tradition alive.

Exploring the Exhibits: A Walk Through Sri Lankan Mythology

The museum has several unique types of masks, each with a story and purpose. Some of the highlights for me were:

Raksha Masks – Protectors and Guardians

  • Cobra Raksha – A fierce mask depicting a cobra believed to offer protection.
  • Naga Raksha – A serpent-like mask associated with wisdom and divine intervention.
  • Gurulu Raksha – Depicting a hawk, symbolizing rescue from danger.
  • Gara Raksha – Used in rituals to ward off evil spirits and bad luck.

Kolam Masks – Satirical & Storytelling Characters

These masks were initially used in folk theatre, portraying comic and royal characters. Some of my favourites included:

  • Jasa Kolama – A humorous depiction of village chiefs.
  • Arachchi Kolama – A satirical representation of a colonial soldier.
  • Nonchi Akka Kolama – The wife of a drummer announcer, adding a dramatic touch to performances.

Sanni Masks – Healing & Exorcism Rituals

These were perhaps the most intriguing and spine-chilling masks in the collection. The Sanni Yakuma exorcism ritual is performed to cure illnesses caused by evil spirits. Each mask represents a different ailment:

  • Deva Sanniya – Protects against measles, typhoid, and smallpox.
  • Ginijala Sanniya – Associated with burning fevers and intense body heat.
  • Kana Sanniya – Linked to eye diseases and visual impairments.
  • Jala Sanniya – Related to waterborne illnesses.

Seeing these masks up close, with their exaggerated features and vivid expressions, gave me chills. The idea that these rituals were once performed to drive out sickness and misfortune made me reflect on how deeply Sri Lankan culture is connected to spiritual beliefs and traditional medicine.

A Living Tradition: The Role of the Wijesooriya Family

Ambalangoda’s mask-making tradition is preserved thanks to dedicated families, such as the Wijesooriya family, who have been crafting masks for generations.

One of their most ambitious projects is carving a complete set of 120 traditional masks, a testament to their commitment to preserving Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage. Though the museum can only display a portion of these masks, the collection showcases the depth and diversity of this art form.

Why You Should Visit the Ambalangoda Mask Museum

Visiting this museum was an eye-opening experience, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka through art, history, and storytelling. Here’s why you should visit:

Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit for Culture Enthusiasts

My visit to the Ambalangoda Mask Museum gave me a newfound appreciation for Sri Lanka’s artistic and cultural heritage. The level of craftsmanship, the rich folklore behind each mask, and the dedication of the artisans blew me away.
