Towering at 100 meters, this cascading beauty ranks as the 15th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and gracefully descends in a sequence of steps before merging into the Pundalu Oya River, a tributary of Kotmale Oya.

As I made my way to this enchanting waterfall, the journey itself became an experience—winding roads, misty hills, and endless tea plantations set the perfect backdrop for an adventure. My Experience at Dunsinane Falls

Dunsinane Falls lies nestled between two historic tea estates—Dunsinane Estate and Sheen Estate. At first, I found it interesting that the falls were once called Dunsinane-Sheen Falls, a name that faded over time, giving way to its present identity.

Approaching the falls, I was immediately struck by its two-tiered formation. About 30 meters high, the upper part flows over an expansive rocky terrain. Standing on the bridge, I noticed a small Hindu Kovil and a beautifully sculpted statue in the middle of the rocky plain, adding a unique cultural charm to the scenery.

But the lower cascade took my breath away—a powerful 70-meter drop just beyond the bridge. Unlike the upper falls, there isn’t a proper pathway leading down to its base. However, walking further along the road, I found the perfect viewpoint, where both waterfall tiers framed a postcard-worthy scene.

I stood there, mesmerized by the roar of the falling water and the cool mist that kissed my skin. The air smelled fresh, infused with the crispness of tea plantations and wet earth, a scent I wish to bottle up and take home.

How to Get There

Reaching Dunsinane Falls is an adventure, with multiple routes leading to this hidden wonder.

From Nuwara Eliya:

• Travel along the A5 (PBC Highway) until you reach Pundalu Oya Junction.
• Turn left and continue along the road to the falls.

From Colombo:

• Take the Colombo-Kandy road and drive up to Mawanella.
• From there, follow B279 via Hemmathagama and Ambuluwawa to Gampola.
• Join the A5 (PBC Highway), and at Thawalanthenna Junction, turn right onto B412 (Tawalanthenna-Thalawakele road).
• After 14.5 km, take a left onto the road leading to Dunsinane Falls and drive another 2.7 km.

Alternatively, if you prefer a Hatton route, you can:

• Travel via Avissawella-Hatton-Nuwara Eliya highway to Ginigathhena.
• Turn left onto B319 (Nawalapitiya-Ginigathhena road).
• Continue on B506 (Nawalapitiya-Harangala road) before joining B148 (Harangala-Kalapitiya-Kumbaloluwa road).
• From Kumbaloluwa, turn onto B412 and follow the signs to Dunsinane Falls.

The last stretch of the road is relatively narrow, so if you're travelling by car or tuk-tuk, proceed cautiously.

Best Time to Visit

I was lucky to visit Dunsinane Falls during the monsoon season (October–December) when the waterfall was in full flow—a powerful, breathtaking sight. However, if you’re planning a visit during this period, check with the locals beforehand, as heavy rains can sometimes make it unsafe.

Visiting between January and September is an excellent option for those who prefer a quieter, drier experience. While the waterfall may not be as mighty, the lush green surroundings, tea estates, and refreshing pools make it a relaxing escape from city life.

For those up for a short trek, climbing to the upper section of the falls offers a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and tea estates. It’s not too tricky, but I’d recommend wearing proper footwear as the rocks can be slippery.

Since Dunsinane Falls is between two tea estates, it’s worth leisurely strolling through the plantations. If you’re lucky, you might even see tea pickers at work!

5. Adventure Activities

For the thrill-seekers, activities like canyoning and rappelling are possible—but only with a licensed guide and proper safety gear.
