About this Attraction
Nestled in the picturesque Huluganga Town in Sri Lanka’s Central Province, Huluganga Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that offers an escape into serene beauty. My visit to this majestic waterfall, located just 30 kilometres from Kandy, was a refreshing journey into nature’s embrace.
A Spectacular Waterfall and Its Surroundings
Standing at a height of 75 meters, Huluganga Falls gracefully cascades into the villages of Elliyadda and Aratthana, leaving a delicate mist that brings life to the surrounding flora and fauna. Watching the water tumble down in a rhythmic dance was mesmerizing, and the refreshing spray added to the sensory experience.
The Life-Giving Hulu River
Huluganga Falls is fed by the Hulu River, which originates from the enchanting Knuckles Mountain Range, famously known as the "Mist-laden Mountain Range." The pristine clarity of the Hulu River was striking, even during the rainy season—a rarity that speaks volumes about the well-preserved natural environment of the area.
As the Hulu River continues its journey downstream, it flows into the Victoria Reservoir, which is home to the tallest dam in Sri Lanka. Learning about this connection added a deeper appreciation for how this waterfall plays a vital role in the region’s ecosystem.
A Hidden Gem in Television Fame
Huluganga Falls gained newfound fame thanks to its feature on the popular TV show "Mansion by the Fall." Seeing the stunning landscapes and cultural richness of Huluganga Town on-screen piqued my curiosity, but experiencing it in person was unparalleled. The show brought well-deserved attention to this hidden gem, but the area still maintains its tranquil and unspoiled charm.
Pristine Waters and Environmental Harmony
One of the most remarkable aspects of Huluganga Falls is the purity of its water. The riverbed's rocks, grass, and plant life keep the water clear, even during heavy rains. The area's low pollution levels are a testament to the locals’ efforts to preserve this natural wonder, making the waterfall even more special.
The Scenic Journey to Devathura Falls
While exploring Huluganga Falls, I also ventured to Devathura Falls, located approximately 26 km from Nuwara Eliya. The journey along the Peradeniya–Badulla–Chenkaladi Highway was a scenic treat, with winding roads, lush greenery, and occasional glimpses of cascading waterfalls.
Interestingly, this route passes the old Nuwara Eliya Road, which predates the Ramboda Tunnel. Walking along this historical road felt like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who travelled these paths before modern infrastructure transformed the region.
A Journey Worth Taking
My visit to Huluganga Falls and its surrounding attractions was a serene and eye-opening experience. The captivating beauty of the falls, the historical significance of the area, and the pristine condition of its natural resources left an indelible impression on me.
If you’re seeking a destination that combines natural splendour with cultural richness, Huluganga Falls is a must-visit. It’s not just a place to admire but a reminder of the harmonious relationship between people and nature—one that deserves to be cherished and preserved for generations to come.
