About this Attraction
Visiting Ridiyagama Safari Park in Hambantota was an exhilarating experience. As Sri Lanka’s first-ever drive-through safari park, it offers a unique opportunity to witness wildlife in their natural habitats. At the same time, we remain safely enclosed in a safari jeep or bus. Spanning a vast 500-acre landscape, the park was a marvel to explore, combining thrilling encounters with serene moments of connection to nature.
Getting There
Reaching the park was a smooth drive through Sri Lanka’s southern province. Conveniently accessible via the E01 expressway, it’s about a 3-hour drive from Colombo and just over an hour from nearby attractions like Yala and Udawalawe. Arranging private transportation is a must, as public transport does not serve the park directly. The journey, passing scenic countryside, set the tone for the adventure ahead.
The Zones: Up Close with Wildlife
Ridiyagama Safari Park is divided into distinct zones, each home to different species, offering a genuinely immersive wildlife experience:
- Lion Zone: The first stop on our safari was the Lion Zone, where we observed majestic African lions resting under the shade of trees. It was surreal to be just meters away from these magnificent predators, separated only by the safety of our vehicle.
- Tiger Zone: Moving on, the Tiger Zone introduced us to the graceful Bengal tigers. Watching these powerful animals stroll through their habitat was a moment of awe and admiration for nature’s raw beauty.
- Elephant Zone: The Elephant Zone featured both African and Sri Lankan elephants. The sight of these gentle giants approaching our jeep was heartwarming, offering a rare and intimate connection with these incredible creatures.
- General Animal Zone: This zone was a true showcase of diversity. From zebras grazing in the open fields to ostriches strutting about and hippos lazing near the water, it felt like stepping into a vibrant corner of the animal kingdom.
A Unique Open Concept
What sets Ridiyagama Safari Park apart is its open concept. The animals roam freely within their designated zones while visitors observe them from protected vehicles. This setup ensures the safety of both humans and animals and creates an authentic safari experience.
Immersive Experiences with Expert Guidance
One of the highlights of the visit was the knowledgeable guides who accompanied us. They provided fascinating insights into the animals’ behaviours, habits, and habitats, making the experience educational and entertaining. Their passion for wildlife was evident, adding depth to the journey.
Facilities and Comfort
Ridiyagama Safari Park is well-equipped to ensure a comfortable visit. The spacious car park, clean washrooms, and small shops offering snacks and drinks made our trip hassle-free. Despite the heat, the well-shaded seating areas provided much-needed respite.
Tips for Visiting
- Plan your visit during cooler parts of the day to avoid the intense heat.
- Carry water and wear comfortable clothing.
- Follow all the park's safety guidelines, including staying quiet and not feeding the animals.
Admission and Costs
The park’s entrance fees were affordable, with options for buses and jeeps based on the preferred level of engagement. For just Rs. 500.00, I could experience an adventure unlike any other in Sri Lanka.
