Located near the Maligawila Buddha Statue in the Monaragala District, this ancient masterpiece left me in awe with its sheer size, intricate craftsmanship, and profound spiritual significance.

As I approached the site, the statue stood proudly atop a small stepped pyramid nestled amidst the lush greenery of the surrounding landscape. The statue's grandeur was undeniable, measuring an impressive 9.85 meters (32.3 feet) in height and carved from a single crystalline limestone rock. Its peaceful yet commanding presence seemed to radiate the very essence of Buddhist teachings.
A Journey Through History
Learning about the statue’s history added a deeper layer of appreciation. Built during the 9th century AD by King Dappula, the statue is a testament to Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage. Remarkably, this monumental figure had been lost to history for centuries, hidden beneath dense vegetation, until its rediscovery in 1941.
Hearing about the challenges it faced—including being dynamited by treasure hunters—made me even more grateful for the efforts of Sri Lanka’s Department of Archaeology, which meticulously restored the statue in the 1990s. The restoration preserved its integrity, allowing modern visitors like me to marvel at its original beauty.

How to Reach the Statue
Reaching the Dambegoda Bodhisattva Statue was an adventure in itself. Here’s how I got there:
- By Car: I hired a car from Buttala, about 6 km away. The 30-minute drive was smooth and scenic, passing through beautiful countryside.
- By Bus: For those travelling from major cities like Colombo or Kandy, buses to Buttala are readily available. From Buttala, tuk-tuks or taxis can take you directly to the site.
- By Train: The nearest railway station is Ella, about 35 km away. From there, a combination of bus or taxi rides will get you to the statue.

- Best Time to Visit: Mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid the midday heat and enjoy the serene atmosphere.
- Dress Modestly: As it’s a sacred site, wearing appropriate clothing shows respect for its cultural and religious significance.
