About this Attraction

During my recent visit to Delft Island in Sri Lanka's Northern Province, I was introduced to one of the most intriguing natural wonders—the Baobab tree. Known for its unique appearance and fascinating history, the Baobab tree captivated my imagination with its enormous, hollow trunks and roots that seem to stretch towards the sky.

A Tree Steeped in History

The Baobab trees on Delft Island are thought to have been introduced during the Dutch colonial period, brought to Sri Lanka by African laborers who were traded on the island. Standing among these ancient trees, I felt a profound connection to the history they symbolize—a blend of Sri Lanka’s colonial past and the cultural influences that shaped the region.

The Legend of the Yaksha and the Baobab

The local legend surrounding these trees made my experience even more memorable. According to the story, God gifted trees to different societies, and the Yaksha tribe, unsure of how to plant their tree, placed it upside down. This explains why the tree’s branches resemble roots reaching skyward. Hearing this tale from a local added a mythical charm to my visit.

A Walk Among Giants

Walking through the Baobab trees was awe-inspiring. The most striking feature was the massive hollow trunk of one tree, large enough to fit three adults comfortably inside. Standing within the hollow, I couldn’t help but marvel at the resilience of these ancient trees that have stood the test of time and continue to thrive in the island’s arid environment.

Baobabs Across the Island

Delft Island is home to 34 Baobab trees, each unique in size and shape. These trees dot the landscape, creating a stark contrast against the otherwise dry and rugged terrain of the island. Exploring their locations felt like uncovering natural treasures in the island’s history.

Preserving a Piece of History

While the Baobab trees are a vital part of Delft Island’s identity, they also face environmental changes and human activity challenges. Efforts are being made to protect these iconic trees, ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations to witness and appreciate.
