About this Attraction

My visit to the Pinnawala Open Zoo felt like stepping into a place with a remarkable story. Established on April 17, 2015, it marked Sri Lanka’s first open-concept zoo, designed to mimic natural habitats for the animals. Learning about its history, from the initial vision in 2000 by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga to its completion under President Mahinda Rajapakse’s administration, gave me a deeper appreciation of the effort behind this incredible project. The staggering LKR 862 million investment reflects the country’s dedication to wildlife conservation.

Exploring the Zoo

Walking into the Pinnawala Open Zoo was like entering a wildlife and nature sanctuary. The zoo is divided into enclosures, offering a unique glimpse into the animal kingdom. Although some areas were still under construction, there was plenty to explore and marvel at.

Pet Area

The vibrant Pet Area was my first stop. Interacting with the friendly animals was heartwarming; they seemed just as curious about us as we were about them. Watching children connect with these tame creatures made me smile, highlighting the importance of educating younger generations about responsible pet ownership.

Swan Pond

Next, I strolled along the picturesque Swan Pond. The area exuded peace and elegance with its water lilies and lush greenery. The swans glided gracefully across the water, creating a serene and almost meditative atmosphere that was impossible to resist.

Deer Enclosure

The Deer Enclosure was another highlight of my visit. Watching the majestic deer with their elegant antlers roam freely in a naturalistic setting was mesmerizing. It felt as though I had stepped into their world, surrounded by the quiet beauty of their habitat.

Crocodile Enclosure

The Crocodile Enclosure offered an entirely different kind of thrill. Seeing these ancient creatures basking in the sun, showcasing their strength and presence, was a sight. I made sure to admire them from a safe distance, appreciating their role in the ecosystem.

Leopard Enclosure

The Leopard Enclosure, the largest in the zoo, was an unforgettable experience. Witnessing the elusive and striking Sri Lanka Leopards in an environment that closely mimicked their natural habitat was awe-inspiring. Observing their stealthy movements and captivating beauty gave me a newfound respect for these incredible predators.

Bear Enclosure

The Bear Enclosure brought a sense of playfulness to the visit. Watching the sloth bears, or "dancing bears," climb trees and engage in their antics was entertaining and fascinating. Their unique behaviour and charm left a lasting impression.

Butterfly Garden

The Butterfly Garden was a delightful escape into a kaleidoscope of colours. Butterflies of various shapes and sizes fluttered around me, creating a magical atmosphere. Learning about their life cycle and transformation was as educational as it was enchanting.

Animals from Sri Lanka and Beyond

The zoo's diverse collection of animals was impressive. From native species like the Purple-faced leaf monkey and Asian elephant to exotic creatures in the World Zone, the Pinnawala Open Zoo offered a glimpse into the vast diversity of wildlife from Sri Lanka and around the globe.

Practical Information

The entrance fees were reasonable, and the zoo’s daily operating hours (8:30 AM to 5:30 PM) allowed plenty of time to explore. I spent around four hours there and felt it was just the right amount of time to fully experience the enclosures, interact with the animals, and take in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Final Reflections

The Pinnawala Open Zoo is more than just a place to see animals; it’s a space where conservation and education come together. The immersive design, naturalistic enclosures, and focus on preserving wildlife left me inspired and grateful for such initiatives.

Whether visiting with family, friends, or alone, the Pinnawala Open Zoo promises an unforgettable experience that deepens your connection with nature and its fascinating inhabitants.
