About this Attraction

My visit to Batticaloa wouldn’t have been complete without exploring the renowned Kallady Bridge, a piece of living history on the picturesque island of Sri Lanka. Known as the Lady Manning Bridge during colonial times, this structure holds the title of Sri Lanka’s oldest and longest iron bridge, standing proudly as a reminder of a bygone era.

A Walk Through History

The bridge, built by the British during their colonial rule, is a marvel of early engineering. Its construction was meticulous, and its iron framework speaks to the craftsmanship of the time. Originally named after Lady Manning, the wife of Sir William Manning, a British Governor of Ceylon, it was a critical link between the suburb of Kallady and Batticaloa town. Walking across the bridge felt like stepping back in time, imagining the carriages and traders who once crossed it as part of daily life.

The Birth of Modernity: The New Kallady Bridge

While the original bridge still stands, I was impressed by the New Kallady Bridge, completed in 2013. Its sleek, modern design reflects Sri Lanka's growth and progress. Spanning an impressive 288 meters in length and 16.5 meters in width, the new bridge contrasts its predecessor yet complements it perfectly. This latest addition ensures a smoother and more efficient flow of traffic, a testament to modern engineering while paying homage to its historic roots.

The Legend of the Singing Fish

One of the most fascinating aspects of my visit was the story of the “singing fish”, a legend that has intrigued locals and visitors for generations. According to the tale, musical sounds can sometimes emanate from beneath the bridge, resembling the haunting melodies of fish singing. While I didn’t hear the mysterious tunes myself, the thought of it added a magical element to my experience. Locals speak about researchers and travellers who have tried to uncover the mystery, but it remains unsolved, leaving the legend intact.

The Timeless Appeal of Kallady Bridge

Standing on the bridge, with the wind in my hair and the waters of Batticaloa Lagoon glistening below, I couldn’t help but feel connected to the past and present. The old bridge represents heritage, resilience, and the colonial chapter of Sri Lanka, while the new bridge stands for progress and innovation.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a seeker of legends, or a traveller drawn to unique experiences, Kallady Bridge offers something special. Its enduring legacy and the tales surrounding it make it a must-visit destination in Batticaloa. For me, it was more than just a bridge—it was a journey into the heart of Sri Lanka’s story.
