About this Attraction
Nestled between the picturesque hills of Ella and Demodara, the Nine Arch Bridge is a marvel I enjoyed visiting during my trip to Sri Lanka. The journey to the Bridge is an adventure, starting from the Halpe Textile Centre on Badulla Bandarawela Road, followed by a 2 km walk along Gotuwala Road. As I meandered through quaint paths surrounded by lush greenery, I could already sense the magic awaiting me.
Experiencing the "Bridge in the Sky"
Its grandeur left me in awe as I approached the Nine Arch Bridge. This colonial-era masterpiece, often called the "Bridge in the Sky," perfectly blended with the serene backdrop of rolling hills and dense jungle. Standing tall at 80-100 feet with a span of 300 feet and a diameter of 25 feet, the Bridge is a testament to 20th-century engineering brilliance. Its nine arches, meticulously crafted, seemed to hold stories of the past, connecting not just two hills but also the hearts of all who visit.
Captivated by the Passing Trains
One of the highlights of my visit was timing it perfectly with the arrival of a train. Watching the locomotive gracefully barrel along the Bridge was a mesmerizing sight, as if the past had come alive briefly. The rhythmic clatter of the train added to the enchanting atmosphere. This moment, framed by the abundant greenery of Ella's hills, was a photographer’s paradise, and I was glad to have my camera ready to capture it.
A Walk Along the Bridge
Walking along the Nine Arch Bridge was an experience unlike any other. The sturdy structure beneath my feet resonated with history, while the panoramic views around me were nothing short of breathtaking. The lush jungle, rolling hills, and clear skies created an almost surreal canvas.
Tips for a Memorable Visit
To make the most of the experience, I recommend checking the train schedule beforehand. Arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon avoids the midday heat and provides the soft, golden light ideal for photography. Comfortable walking shoes and water are essential, especially if you plan to explore the trails around the area.
A Marvel of Engineering and Nature
The Nine Arch Bridge isn’t just a bridge; it’s a seamless blend of human ingenuity and nature’s beauty. As I left the site, the memory of its architectural magnificence and the serene surroundings stayed with me, making it one of the most cherished experiences of my trip to Sri Lanka.
