Walking through the zoo, I couldn't help but reflect on its rich history. Initially established by John Hagenbeck as a private collection centre, the Sri Lankan government later acquired the zoo in 1936. Under the visionary leadership of its first director, Aubrey Weinman, it transformed into the 26-acre wonder it is today. The beautifully landscaped grounds are adorned with lush greenery, ponds, and fountains, creating a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

The zoo's collection is truly mesmerizing. With over 70 species of mammals, 90 species of birds, and 30 species of butterflies, there’s always something to marvel at. Each enclosure is thoughtfully designed to provide a glimpse into the natural habitats of these creatures.

The reptile house, with its impressive collection of snakes and crocodiles, was fascinating and slightly eerie. The vibrant colours of the butterfly garden and the rich aquatic life in the fish tanks added a calming balance to the excitement of the larger animals.

One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the zoo’s museum and live reef tank.
