About this Attraction

Dehiwala National Zoo, nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka, is an unforgettable destination for anyone who loves wildlife and nature. During my visit, I was awestruck by the vibrant atmosphere and the extraordinary collection of animals it houses. Known globally as the Colombo Zoo, this is a place for entertainment and a hub for education and conservation.

The Origins and Transformation of Dehiwala National Zoo

Walking through the zoo, I couldn't help but reflect on its rich history. Initially established by John Hagenbeck as a private collection centre, the Sri Lankan government later acquired the zoo in 1936. Under the visionary leadership of its first director, Aubrey Weinman, it transformed into the 26-acre wonder it is today. The beautifully landscaped grounds are adorned with lush greenery, ponds, and fountains, creating a serene escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

A Diverse Array of Wildlife

The zoo's collection is truly mesmerizing. With over 70 species of mammals, 90 species of birds, and 30 species of butterflies, there’s always something to marvel at. I was thrilled to see exotic animals like cheetahs, black rhinos, and white-handed gibbons during my visit. Each enclosure is thoughtfully designed to provide a glimpse into the natural habitats of these creatures.

The reptile house, with its impressive collection of snakes and crocodiles, was fascinating and slightly eerie. The vibrant colours of the butterfly garden and the rich aquatic life in the fish tanks added a calming balance to the excitement of the larger animals.

Educational Experiences and Conservation Efforts

One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the zoo’s museum and live reef tank. These interactive exhibits provide a wealth of knowledge about the animal kingdom and the importance of preserving it. The zoo’s commitment to breeding rare and endangered species is evident, making it more than just a place for recreation—it’s a centre for conservation.

Entertainment for Everyone

Families with children will especially appreciate the zoo's entertainment offerings. From the playful antics of the chimpanzees to the graceful movements of the elephants, there’s something for every age group. The tranquil environment of the Buddhist Subodharamaya Temple nearby offers a perfect complement to the lively zoo experience.

A Must-Visit Destination

Dehiwala National Zoo left me with a profound appreciation for wildlife and the importance of conservation. It’s a place to connect with nature, learn about diverse species, and create lasting memories with loved ones. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Sri Lanka, this zoo is an experience you shouldn’t miss.
