About this Attraction

During my journey to Tangalle, I had the opportunity to visit the Hummanaya Blow Hole, located in the quaint fishing village of Kudawella. Known as the largest blowhole in Sri Lanka, the site promised a unique natural spectacle and certainly lived up to its reputation.

The Journey to Hummanaya

The adventure began with a leisurely 20-minute walk through a charming village. Along the way, local vendors offered refreshing drinks and delightful snacks, adding a touch of Sri Lankan warmth to the experience. The anticipation built as I strolled towards the rocky outcrop, with glimpses of the vast Indian Ocean in the distance.

The Spectacle at the Summit

Upon reaching the summit, the sight of the Hummanaya Blow Hole was nothing short of mesmerizing. A powerful jet of seawater shot up into the sky, reaching heights of up to 25–30 meters (82–98 feet). The sound of the water gushing through the gorge, followed by its graceful descent back into the ocean, was exhilarating and humbling. Watching nature's raw power in action left me in awe.

The Scenic Views

The panoramic views from the summit were equally breathtaking. The sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean stretched endlessly, creating a serene backdrop for the blowhole's dramatic display. It was a perfect spot to pause and soak in the beauty of nature.

Best Time to Visit

I learned that the best time to witness the Hummanaya Blow Hole in its full glory is between April and September, during the off-peak season in southern Sri Lanka. The cooler weather and higher water jets during this period make it an ideal time to visit. I chose to go in the morning to avoid the midday heat, which proved wise.
