About this Attraction

During my visit to Nuwara Eliya, I made it a point to explore the Seetha Amman Kovil, a temple steeped in history and mythology. Located just 1 km from the serene Hakgala Botanical Garden, this unique South Indian architectural marvel is the only Hindu temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to Princess Sita from the epic Ramayana.

As I arrived at the temple, I was immediately struck by its vibrant and intricate design. The surrounding scenery, with the lush greenery of Nuwara Eliya, added to the temple's serene atmosphere. A gentle stream ran close by, shimmering under the sunlight, and it’s said that Sita Devi once bathed in these very waters. Across the stream, I spotted circular depressions on the rock face, believed to be the footprints of Ravana’s elephant—adding a mystical touch to the location.

The Mythical Connection

The temple’s connection to the Ramayana was evident everywhere. Legend has it that King Ravana kept Sita Devi captive here to protect her from harm. While at Ashok Vatika, Sita prayed on the rock by the stream, adding a sacred aura to this site. There is even a part of the stream where the water tastes sour, which is attributed to a curse by Sita, as the story goes.

Interestingly, the area surrounding the temple is covered in black soil, which locals believe was burnt during Hanuman’s mission to rescue Sita. Some of Hanuman’s footprints can still be seen near the stream, and the contrast between the smaller and larger footprints amazed me—it was as if the past was still alive in the present.

Inside the Temple

Stepping inside the temple, I was welcomed by statues of Lord Rama, Sita Devi, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The idols were beautifully adorned, radiating a divine presence. It felt humbling to be in a place where the legends of the Ramayana were not just stories but living traditions.

The priest explained the significance of the morning and evening puja ceremonies and how devotees, including non-Hindus, are encouraged to participate. It was heartwarming to see how inclusivity and devotion went hand in hand here. The forehead mark I received after the prayers felt like a small yet meaningful blessing to carry forward.

A Blend of Spirituality and Nature

Walking around the temple, I couldn’t help but admire the natural beauty that surrounds it. The lush greenery, the soothing sound of the stream, and the peaceful ambience made it more than just a spiritual destination—it was a place to reconnect with oneself. For bird lovers, the area is also known for its vibrant birdlife, making the journey even more rewarding.

Practical Tips for Visitors

If you plan to visit, adhere to the modest dress code, similar to visiting a Buddhist temple. The temple is open daily, with morning puja from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and evening puja from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. While there’s no entrance fee, donations are welcome, and participating in the puja services adds a spiritual connection to the visit.

A Memorable Experience

My visit to Seetha Amman Kovil was nothing short of extraordinary. The blend of history, mythology, and natural beauty made it an enriching experience. It’s a place that goes beyond the physical, leaving you with a sense of wonder and a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka. Whether you’re a devotee, a history enthusiast, or a curious traveller, this temple is a must-visit destination that stays with you long after you leave.
