Walking into the temple grounds, I felt an overwhelming sense of history. The original Gokanna Viharaya, built as early as the 3rd century, was a testament to Sri Lanka's Buddhist heritage. I learned that King Mahasen, a devout ruler, established the temple when Trincomalee (then Gokanna) was a thriving port. Getting to the temple was straightforward. Trincomalee is easily accessible by road, rail, and even boat. I travelled by train from Colombo, enjoying scenic countryside views before reaching Trincomalee. From there, a short tuk-tuk ride brought me to the gates of Fort Fredrick. The journey was an adventure, adding to the experience of visiting this historical gem.

As I left the temple, I couldn’t help but feel a deep appreciation for Sri Lanka’s layered history and cultural diversity. Despite the challenges and transformations over the centuries, the Gokanna Raja Maha Vihara Temple symbolises resilience and spiritual devotion.
